The quality of VHS tapes degrade with each playback. In fact, the quality of videotapes will degrade over the years, even if the tapes are not being used. Their lifespan is short due to repeated playing, stretching and creasing caused caused by heat and condensation, and damage from being eaten by VCRs.


Digitally recorded video and audio are superior in quality. DVD quality does not degrade with each playback. They may last even up to 100 years - DVDs are easier to handle and store because they are more compact than VHS tapes.
